The Leaving Cert Chemistry course is taught over 2 years. The core content includes the periodic table and atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry formulas and equations, acids and bases, volumetric analysis, thermochemistry, organic chemistry, rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium and environmental chemistry.
The students who study chemistry develop an appreciation of the scientific method and rational thought. They improve their skills of observation, analysis, evaluation, communication and problem solving. The maths component of the syllabus is not extensive however the student would need to be able to think logically and this would be developed throughout the course.
Chemistry would be necessary for careers in chemical engineering, civil engineering, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine and laboratory technician. Chemistry helps students obtain a greater understanding of the world in which we live, particularly to the environmental issues which so many of us are aware of. Students also learn to appreciate the many advances made in chemistry that influence our lives.
